Gateway Gallery’s KulturaSerye Presents Art Expressions of Freedom

In celebration of the 123rd anniversary of the country’s independence, Gateway Gallery will tackle Images of Freedom: Ultimate Creative Expressions of the Filipino as its latest KulturaSerye webinar on June 19, Saturday, at 2 p.m.

This free Facebook webinar will be hosted by Filipino contemporary artist Riel Jaramillo Hilario. He will discuss his definitive list of artworks that strongly manifest Filipinos’ high regard for freedom, dignity, and human rights. The select artworks will be discussed in their historical context and their perpetual significance to the Filipino people.

Hilario is a multifaceted artist and independent curator based in Lucban, Quezon. He is a recipient of the Cultural Center of the Philippines 13 Artists Award and winner of the Ateneo Art Awards, the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards, and the Don Papa Art Competition. He has written numerous monographs on Philippine art history, and has published articles in art journals both here and abroad. Among his mentors in art history writing are Ruben DF Defeo, Santiago Jak Pilar, Sonia Pinto Ner, and Bobi Valenzuela.

He has authored two books on Philippine art and is currently at work with many more on art education, contemporary art practice, and the Philippine schools of living traditions (woodcarving). He has lived and worked through grants and residencies in Paris, New York, Penang, and Seoul, with frequent tours of Singapore, Jakarta, Siem Reap, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur/Melaka. He has represented the Philippines in international conferences where he has read papers on art practices of the Philippines.
